need ideas!!

so I am charged with the task of creating a demo game for the Game Developer's Conference next week. It is suppose to showcase our ability to take a media library and choose songs and play songs and show the album (think like Windows Media Player) but in a game form. So far all we came up with is a guessing game, where we will play a clip of a song, and then show you a bunch of choices and you have to guess which song is it or which album it came from. I will probably implement this first since of the time crunch, but can you guys think of any better idea of a more fun music game I can do?

Maybe you could implement a memory game where you have the albums cover on cards. All the cards will start face down, and when the person picks a card, the card will turn over showing the album and playing the music. Then the person needs to find the other matching album/song.

I have a great idea. Organize them into tiers of songs based on beat. Then the player gets to advance through the tiers of music and they have to play a set of notes on some music instrument shaped controller, perhaps a guitar. It can be a rhythm game but gives the player the illusion of being in an actual rock band. Then as they play the song better, they get more points which enables them to unlock new tiers of music. For an added twist, let's toss in this thing called Celestial Force which allows notes played to be counted as double points for a period of time. We can name it Axe Paragon. Should be a hit. =)

That isn't a half bad idea. If I recall correctly, there *was* a rhythm game out there that would autogenerate beat patterns for songs that you provided. So, you could make a guitar-hero or DDR type game that used any Windows Media Library as the songlist. No more griping about how your favorite song is not in your favorite rhythm game!

Just to toss out another idea...

For each song, you have a row of music sheet, which will act as a "board". Break up each song into little clips, which I'll refer to as jigsaw "pieces". When you scroll your cursor over a "piece", it'll start playing that clip. Objective of the game is to match the pieces to the appropriate song board and arrange all the clips in the proper order.

I think you have the right idea, since you have a time crunch and the idea is to showcase the backend.

If you had more time, you could cut the album art up into numbered pieces that fly across the screen and bounce around, and if you click each piece a clip of the song will play. Then, if you click them all in order, you would string together the whole short clip of the song in proper order (and you would realize it because the song would sound right), causing those bits of album art to disappear. Shooooooooooting game!

That idea screams for a light gun/wiimote peripheral for the shooting part.

lol. all good ideas, but some are kinda beyond my capabilities. Although that matching segment of song game seems really cool. Maybve I can do that after the conference!! thank you :)

Are you going to be attending the GDC to demo your game? :)
